                      Nerve Related Shoulder Pain

                      Picture
Pain felt in and around the shoulder may arise from the nerves of the arm as they pass the shoulder or from the axillary nerve, a branch of the X nerve that circles around the upper humerus bone.

The shoulder pain may be nerve related even if there are changes evident in the rotator cuff muscles on a diagnostic ultrasound examination or MRI scan. The changes evident in the muscles, ligaments or bone of the shoulder joint may not be responsible for the symptoms and an called 'false positive' findings. The assessment of a skilled clinician is required to differentiate between a false positive finding and a true positive finding.

The nerve related shoulder pain will be reproduced by the nerve loading tests and the shoulder pain will change with movement of the hand or neck; when no movement of the shoulder muscles or ligaments is occurring.

Irritable shoulder pain that is of nerve origin will be aggravated by most muscle strengthening and soft tissue stretching/mobilising exercise programmes.
